ASPIRATION

Aspiration is a call to the Divine. — The Mother

I think that all the devotees of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have been pained to read or know what Peter Hees wrote about Sri Aurobindo. They also have been amazed in the way Peter tried to explain the person in Sri Aurobindo in the name of writing his biography. No great saint or Avatar in this world will be able retain their enlightened status under the scanning mind or the evaluating yardstick of Peter Hees which he applied in the case of Sri Aurobindo.. Lord Krishna and Lord Rama have yet to be sanctioned as Avatars in many quarters even in oriental India-God’s own home. There would have been no such hue and cry about what PH wrote on Sri Aurobindo had he not been an ashramite of Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Indian Communists have held and even expressed derogatory opinions on Sri Aurobindo, the Mother and finally Auroville. So, however sad at such mean and stupid gesture of the so called intellectuals –we are accustomed to forgive them with a silent prayer “May God bless them with wisdom!”
But as we love the Ashram named after Sri Aurobindo and founded by the Mother –we are uncomfortable with Peter Hees’ association with it. We get surprised why Peter still stays in the Ashram, for what purpose!
This is the general feeling that has tormented hundreds of devotees and I have not been exception to it. I wrote and expressed my feeling in some places also.
But in the midst of this hue and cry I asked an ashramite not much known to me before about his opinion on the expulsion of PH from the ashram. He paused for a time and told me in brief the following:
“Pranab-da has been collecting signatures from the ahramites as to their opinions for continuance of PH as a member of the ashram. The other day when my turn came –I thought deeply. I have been deeply pained at the attitude of PH in the name of writing a biography of Sri Aurobindo. It should not be expected from an ashramite. But I restrained from putting my signature for expulsion of PH from the ashram.”
I asked “Why?”
He answered “How can I regard myself a judge against his stay whom the Mother gave a shelter in her home? The Mother knew every bit of Peter-his past, present and future. If I find Peter is removed from the Ashram –I may, perhaps be little happy. But in the final analysis that will also not be the right attitude of an Ashramite.”
The purpose of this writing is not about PH or the Ashram. My purpose to write this is to tell that I have realized from the opinion of the above ashramite that I still have very little trust on the Mother. I can never know her in her absolute wisdom and her will. Is there anyone who serves Sri Aurobindo’s purpose perfectly in this world? In Sri Aurobindo’s opinion none can escape punishment (if there should be any) from wrong doings. It is for the Divine’s Grace that we are always forgiven.
By saying all this I do not like to say that no step should be taken against PH. Nor do I opine for a step. I want only to insist that I have missed the right approach that I always should have in respect of my trust on the Mother.

Bikash, thank you very much that you have just touched my heart. Sometimes I, like many people, am swayed by the confusing and noisy appearance which pushes me far from the truth and its relation to the need of my inner being.
